Porsche 911 Supercup 3.8
Overview
Description
This 1996 Porsche Carrera Supercup is one of 216 examples built between 1994 and 1997. Chassis 398095 was campaigned by the Porsche Junior team in 1997 and by Grohs Motorsports in 1998 and 1999. Power comes from a replacement 3.8-liter M64/70 flat-six mated to a six-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes an aluminum hood, a Turnwald rear wing, plexiglass quarter windows, BBS 18″ center-lock forged alloy wheels, a roll cage, a fire-suppression system, Recaro racing seats, and a MOMO steering wheel. Work performed under current ownership reportedly involved overhauling the suspension and brakes in 2011, replacing the engine and clutch in 2013, and repainting the body white in 2017. This 993 Supercup race car is now offered by the seller with import documentation, a Wagenpass, PCA and SVRA logbooks, spare parts, and a bill of sale.
Based on the 993 Carrera, Supercup race cars featured bodywork from the Carrera RS as well as an aluminum hood, a Turnwald rear wing, plexiglass quarter windows, doors without crash bars, and a thinner rear window and door glass than the road-going car. This example was refinished in white under current ownership, and additional features include front and rear tow hooks, hood pins, air intakes in place of the fog lights, and a cowl-mounted electrical cut-off switch. The seller notes stone chips on the front fascia.
Silver 18″ BBS center-lock forged alloy wheels wear 245/645 front and 305/645 rear Pirelli competition-use tires. The 993 Supercup cars feature four-wheel independent suspension and a 70mm lower ride height than the contemporary 993 road car. Stopping power is provided by four-piston calipers over cross-drilled rotors at all four corners. Work performed in 2011 is said to have included overhauling the suspension and brakes. An extra set of four BBS wheels with Pirelli racing slicks as well as a set of four Speedline Supercup wheels are included in the sale and pictured in the gallery below.
The stripped cockpit features a Recaro ProRacer 99 SPG fixed-back bucket driver’s seat with a Porsche crest headrest patch and a Schroth Racing harness. Additional equipment includes a Recaro passenger seat with a Sabelt multi-point harness, a factory-installed Matter roll cage with door bars, a fire-suppression system, a left window net, a wood driver’s floor panel, and red RS-style pull straps on the doors. Electronics consist of a Motorola two-way radio, a Traqmate data acquisition system, and a Traqdata GoPro camera integration module. The upholstery on the left door panel is torn.
The MOMO Corse steering wheel features a Porsche-logo center cap and sits ahead of VDO instrumentation that includes a central 7,600-rpm tachometer, a 300-km/h speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 29k kilometers (~18k miles). The car has not been driven on the track since 2016, according to the seller.
A replacement 3.8-liter air-cooled M64/70 flat-six was reportedly installed in 2013 and features Bosch Motronic engine management and twin-spark ignition.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle that is said to have been serviced in 2013, and the clutch was replaced at that time. Additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery below.
